Stepping Back to Move Forward

Clarity, Health, and Better Decisions

There comes a point when being busy no longer feels productive, it simply becomes exhausting.

For years, I convinced myself I was managing just fine.  Long days between family, work, and everything else placed on my plate became my normal.  Looking back, I'm not sure how I kept up with the pace I was sunk into for so many years.  I just did what so many of us do, I kept plugging along.

When you're constantly in motion, you don't always notice when something is off.  You adapt. You push through.  You tell yourself you'll  slow down someday.

  For me, someday finally arrived.

After nearly twenty years without making any major changes, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life so to speak, and after eight months of contemplating, I did something I never thought I'd have the courage to do and took a little time off to be at peace with myself.

The world was navigating COVID, and the little home that had once been a weekend getaway in Placerville, CA became full-time.

Stepping away wasn't easy.  It felt uncomfortable.  And like many people, I wondered if I was making the right decision.  My decision turned out to be one of the healthiest decisions I had ever made for myself!

Years of sitting behind a desk, long commutes, stress, inflammation, extra weight, and aching knees had quietly caught up with me.  I had become so accustomed to pushing through that I hadn't fully realized how much my body had been trying to tell me!

For the first time in years, I had time to take care of the things I had been putting off, including routine doctor appointments.  During one of my doctor visits, I heard something I couldn't ignore. “If you don't change your daily habits, your physical issues will continue getting worse.”  His prescription wasn't complicated….better nutrition, more exercise and hydration.

That conversation became my turning point, I was ready to take better care of myself, and quite frankly, I was tired of feeling tired.

I didn't make dramatic changes overnight.  Instead, I focused on consistency.  I started moving more, and making healthier choices, one day at a time.  And little by little, things improved.

Today, I smile when I joke that I can see my knees again.  More importantly, I have more energy, more clarity, and a much better understanding of what work-life balance really means.

Little did I know that creating space in my life would eventually lead me down another unexpected path.  My experience has changed more than my health.  It changed the way I approach both my work and my life today.

I've discovered that some of the best conversations with people don't happen across a desk.  They happen by running into them unexpectedly, at events, over coffee, at gatherings, and even more recently during some of my TuneStone Jewelry workshops.

When people step away from the daily demands of running a business or taking care of their home and family, the conversation changes.  Instead of focusing on what's urgent, they begin talking about what's important.  The things they've been meaning to review.  The questions they've been putting off.  The plans they've never quite had time to revisit.

Whether it's your business, your family, your health, or your insurance matters, creating space for yourself often leads to better decisions.  This is something I understand in such a greater way!

Looking back, stepping away wasn't about slowing down.  It was about seeing more clearly.  And sometimes moving forward doesn't mean pushing harder.  Sometimes it means stepping back long enough to regain your spirit.

So, Along the Way...

Life has a way of keeping us busy.  Before we know it, months, or even years can pass without taking time to review the things that matter most.  So whether it's your health, your business, your family, or the plans you've put in place over the years, taking time to step back can provide clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.  And...sometimes the best way to move forward is to take the time needed to see the bigger picture.

The Melody Behind This Story

Every Creative Road story has a melody.

“I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash felt like the perfect tune for this one.
